Outdoor Microcements and Resins

It is interesting how trends evolve over time. We were one of the first companies in the UK who started applying microcements to decorate outdoor spaces such as driveways, in 1993. During that period, block paved driveways were popular, and thousands of meters were installed. However, some concrete surfaces were in excellent condition, and it seemed unnecessary to remove them for block installation, prompting a search for alternatives. Microcement was the solutions. The system we used originated from Australia; this cement-based product was spray-applied over large stencils to create a block effect. That first driveway is still intact today 32 years later.

While the system was relatively easy to use, it required specific weather conditions similar to those in Australia. The base needed to be dry with an extremely low moisture content, and dry weather was essential during application and curing. If there was any moisture present, the product would “bloom,” resulting in salt crystal formation on the surface, which led to installation issues and complications with sealing. Although these problems could be resolved with additional time and materials, the system was not suitable for the UK’s climate.

Over the past 30 years, technology has advanced significantly. Currently, resins are used to create concrete and stone effects. ErreLAB offers two systems designed for outdoor applications, producing finishes that resemble cement, limestone, travertine, and slate, which can be applied to existing concrete walls and floors. Their high-performance decorative resins set new standards for continuous floors and surfaces on patios, terraces, pathways, and pool surrounds.

These new hard resins provide superior hardness and wear resistance, making them suitable for external weathering. They can adapt to various surfaces and geometries, ensuring exceptional aesthetic results and mechanical performance. The continuous surfaces are free from grout lines, easy to clean and maintain, and exhibit unique stylistic definition. This represents the pinnacle of technical research and craftsmanship.

The solvent-free, water-based formulations are pigmented with natural earths and oxides and enriched with lava powder.
