Microcement Flooring

Microcement for floors has become one of the most sought-after surface finishes in contemporary interior and architectural design. Its seamless appearance, durability, and versatility make it suitable for both residential and commercial environments. At Achtis Group, we supply professional-grade mineral, acrylic and epoxy-based microcement systems designed for durability, flexibility and long-term performance.

Below, we explain what microcement is, why it’s such a popular choice, how long it has been in use, the different system types available, and what to consider when specifying or installing it.

What Is Microcement Flooring?

Microcement (sometimes referred to as micro-concrete or micro-screed) is a thin, decorative coating applied by hand in multiple layers to create a seamless, joint-free finish on floor (or wall). Typically installed at a thickness of 2–3mm, it bonds directly to a prepared substrate without the need for full removal of the existing floor.
It is composed of fine aggregates, cement, polymers, pigments, and resins, finished with a protective sealer. The result is a smooth, contemporary surface that can range from natural concrete aesthetics to more decorative textures and colours.

How Long Has Microcement Been in Used For Floors?

Originating in Europe, microcement floors have been in widespread architectural use for over 30 years. Initially popular in Spain and other Mediterranean countries, microcement flooring gained traction across the UK and globally in the early 2000s as minimalist and industrial design trends grew in popularity.
Modern formulations have significantly improved in strength, flexibility, and water resistance compared to earlier systems and resulted in three types of microcement – mineral, acrylic and resin (epoxy and polyurethane). Each type offers different performance characteristics, so it is a good idea to understand what you need for your project.
Achtis have systems for each type of microcement for floors and have a dedicated team available to help you specify the right microcement for you. Call us on 01472 240340 for a friendly and informed conversation or use the contact form.

Types of Microcement Flooring Systems

Different formulations are available depending on the performance requirements of the project, here is a brief run through.

1. Mineral-Based Microcement Floors

These are the traditional microcements, sometimes called mineral based, are cement-rich formulations. They offer a natural, authentic concrete aesthetic and are often chosen for residential floors and interiors.

Best for:

Most domestic situations or commercial decorative walls. Due to their high porosity under their sealers they can stain easily or show water marks in bathroom and wet rooms. We no longer recommend mineral based microcements into bathrooms for this reason.

2. Acrylic-Based Microcement Floors

A hybrid, acrylic systems incorporate polymer resins to improve flexibility and adhesion. However, they are still porous and get their water resistance from the sealer. They also usually have a shorter drying time between courses making them quicker to apply.

Best for:

Domestic and light commercial applications on floors and walls, where a hard wearing and stain resistant surface is needed and where time is a deciding factor.

3. Epoxy-Based Microcement Flooring

Based on the latest technology these systems combine quartz with epoxy resins. They offer enhanced chemical resistance, strength, and durability.

Best for:

Commercial floors and spaces such as bars, nightclubs, kitchens, restaurants and high-traffic environments. Water resistant at every layer these are also suitable for changing rooms, bathrooms and wet rooms.

Each system has its own preparation, curing, and sealing requirements, so correct specification is essential. Call us on 01472 240340 for more information

Why Choose Microcement for Domestic and Commercial Projects?

1. Seamless Finish

Microcement creates a continuous surface without grout lines or joints. This makes it ideal for modern interiors and enhances the perception of space. NB Expansion joints must be honoured.

2. Durability

When correctly specified and installed, microcement is highly durable and suitable for high-traffic commercial environments such as retail stores, restaurants, and offices.

3. Thin Application

At just a few millimetres thick, it can be applied over existing substrates without significantly raising floor levels—ideal for renovation projects.

4. Versatility

It can be applied to floors, walls, staircases, bathrooms, wet rooms, and even furniture, making it suitable for cohesive design schemes.

5. Water Resistance

When sealed correctly, microcement is water-resistant, making it appropriate for bathrooms and kitchens. Epoxy systems are water resistant at every layer of their build,

6. Design Flexibility

Available in a wide range of colours and textures, microcement can be tailored to suit minimalist, industrial, contemporary, or even rustic design styles.

Suitable Substrates (Sub Bases)

Microcement can be applied to a wide variety of stable, well-prepared substrates, including:

• Concrete and screeds(with correct primers)

• Sand/cement, self levelling compounds, anhydrite screeds.

• Existing tiles (with appropriate preparation)

• Self-levelling compounds

• Plasterboard (walls)

• Cement boards

• Plywood (with correct reinforcement and preparation)

The key requirement is that the substrate must be stable, sound, clean, and free from movement.

Things to Be Careful Of When Specifying or Applying Microcement

• Ensure structural stability of the substrate.
• Specify the correct system type for the intended traffic and use.
• Confirm compatibility with underfloor heating systems.
• Allow for appropriate curing times between coats.
• Choose sealers suited to the level of traffic and cleaning regime.
• Clarify client expectations—microcement is not a perfectly uniform finish; natural tonal variation is part of its aesthetic.
