About microcement

What is microcement?

A thin decorative coating, about 2–3 mm, trowelled by hand in several layers to create a seamless finish on floors, walls, stairs and worktops. There are mineral, acrylic and resin types. Our microcement guide explains the differences.

Where can I use it?

In almost any room in homes and commercial buildings, on floors, walls, worktops, stairs, shelving and furniture. Choose the system for the traffic and the water exposure.

Can it be used with underfloor heating?

Yes, both Politura and ErreLAB. Run new underfloor heating for at least 28 days, then switch it off before starting.

Can it be used outside?

For outdoor floors and walls we recommend ErreLAB’s outdoor systems, Spatolato Outdoor and Pietra Continua Outdoor. They’re polyurethane, UV stable and weatherproof. The outdoor versions can also be used indoors, for extra UV resistance in rooms with lots of big windows and natural light.

Is it slip resistant?

Politura is R9 as standard, and anti-slip additives raise it further. ErreLAB Spatolato with Top Clear is R10, and Top Clear SOL with anti-slip aggregate reaches R11 to R12 (DIN 51130). A textured finish also adds grip.

Will it crack?

The products themselves are designed not to crack. But microcement is a surface coating, so cracks or movement in what’s underneath can show through. Repair cracks, tape board joints and carry movement joints through the finish.

What can I do about cracks I already have?

It depends on the crack, its cause and whether it’s still moving. Call our technical team on 01472 240 340 and we’ll help you work it out.

Do I need a reinforcing mesh?

Not with Politura, which is strong and flexible enough without one. ErreLAB has an optional carbon fibre reinforcement for the preparation layer, recommended over tiles.

Politura

What is Politura?

Our own quartz-based mineral microcement. Politura Medium is base and finish in one product, just add water and pre-coloured to order, with Politura Primer, Pre Seal and a choice of sealers.

Can Politura go in a bathroom?

Yes, on floors, walls and worktops away from direct water. It isn’t recommended for showers or other areas that are constantly wet; use an ErreLAB system there.

Can Politura go over tiles?

Not over wall tiles. They need to come off first, then the wall behind is primed as normal.

How many colours are there?

27 named colours, pre-coloured to order. See the Politura colour chart.

Which sealer should I use?

Pre Seal then APU48 keeps the colour true. Micro Sol+ is stronger but darkens the colour. Use all three for maximum protection without the darkening.

ErreLAB

What is ErreLAB?

An Italian range of decorative resin systems from the Covema group, distributed in the UK by Achtis. Epoxy resins indoors, polyurethane outdoors and an acrylic paste (ErreFast), with primers for screeds, tiles, plasterboard and damp substrates.

Can ErreLAB go in a bathroom or shower?

Yes. The resin systems are water resistant at every layer, so they suit bathrooms, wet rooms and showers.

Can ErreLAB go over tiles?

Yes, on walls and floors, if the tiles are well bonded. They need deep cleaning and sanding, lippage levelled, joints filled and carbon fibre or mesh in the base coat so joints don’t show through. Wet areas may need a moisture-barrier primer, and expansion joints must be carried through.

How many colours are there?

A wide colour range across the systems, with colour matching for most RAL and NCS colours. See ErreLAB colours.
