What a microcement floor is

Microcement is a thin decorative coating, trowelled by hand in several layers to make a seamless, joint-free floor. At about 2–3 mm it bonds to a prepared substrate, so in most renovations the existing floor can stay and floor levels barely change.

It’s finished with a protective sealer. Depending on the system and the colour, the result can look like polished concrete, natural stone or something more decorative.

Why choose a microcement floor

SeamlessNo grout lines, so it’s easy to clean and makes a space feel bigger.
ThinAbout 2–3 mm, so it can go over most existing floors.
Hard-wearingSpecified correctly, it handles busy homes and commercial traffic.
One finish throughoutFloors, stairs, walls and worktops can all match.
Your colourA wide colour range, with textures from smooth to stone-like.
Water resistantSealed correctly, it suits kitchens. ErreLAB is water resistant at every layer.

What it can go over

The substrate needs to be stable, sound, clean and free from movement. Each one needs the right primer.

Concrete and screedsSand and cement, anhydrite and self-levelling compounds.
Existing tilesIf they’re well bonded, cleaned, sanded and levelled. See our guide to microcement over tiles.
Timber and boardsPlywood and cement boards, with the right reinforcement and preparation.
Underfloor heatingRun new systems for at least 28 days, then switch off before starting.

Before you specify

A stable substrateCracks and movement in the floor underneath show through.
The right system for the trafficMatch it to the use, the water exposure and the cleaning.
Movement jointsExisting expansion joints must be carried through the finish.
Curing timesAllow the full time between coats.
The right sealerChoose for the traffic and the cleaning regime.
Natural variationIt’s hand-finished, so tone varies slightly. That’s the look.

Questions about microcement floors

Do I need to take up my existing floor?

Usually not. Microcement can go over sound concrete, screed, tiles and timber once they’re prepared and primed. Loose or moving surfaces need fixing first.

Can it go over underfloor heating?

Yes, both Politura and ErreLAB. Run new underfloor heating for at least 28 days, then switch it off before starting.

Is it slip resistant?

Politura is R9 as standard, and anti-slip additives raise it further. ErreLAB Spatolato with Top Clear is R10, and Top Clear SOL with anti-slip aggregate reaches R11 to R12 (DIN 51130).

Will it crack?

The products themselves are designed not to crack, but cracks or movement in the floor underneath can show through. Repair cracks and carry movement joints through the finish.
